review 1: Chik Chak Shabbat is a story about Shabbat, but more importantly it serves as a reminder that we are more alike than different. It's a story about people coming together and enjoying each other, irrespective of their religion or ethnic backgrounds. It instills the value of togetherness, extended "family", and celebrating our differences in a positive, open-minded and educational way. The story involves Goldie and and people from her apartment building who are all from different backgrounds. They gather together to share Goldie's cholent (a traditionally Yiddish slow-cooked stew) and each try to guess which ingredient makes it so delicious. Goldie explains that it's not so much an ingredient but something else much more important (i.e., traditions passed down from her family... more, a reverence for Shabbat, and putting aside typical goings-on to be together). One Friday Goldie is unable to make the cholent and so the other tenants rally together and each brings something to the meal that is reflective of their own ethnic traditions that collectively makes a Shabbat meal which, of course, they enjoy together. Assuming I have grandchildren one day, this will definitely be on our regular read list.
review 2: Age: Preschool-1st gradeFood: DinnerReligion: JudaismCultures: Hispanic, Italian, Korean, and MuslimA heart-warming (and tummy grumbling) story about Goldie Simcha and her special Shabbat stew that brings together people in her apartment building to share in her scrumptious dish. When she is too sick to make it the day before, her neighbors come to the rescue. Even without the special dish, the atmosphere of Shabbot is still present as togetherness is celebrated. less
